Why Marcus Rashford fumed with Donny van de Beek during Manchester United win vs Wolves

A number of Manchester United supporters criticised midfielder Donny van de Beek for his wastefulness in possession during the closing stages of the Reds' 1-0 win over Wolves at Molineux.

Marcus Rashford stepped off the bench to score the winner with just under a quarter of an hour remaining, lifting the Reds into the top four for the first time this season. The England international was dropped to the bench for showing up late to a team meeting earlier in the week.

His well-taken goal extended United's winning run to five matches, as well as stretching their run of successive matches with clean sheets to three. Their recent run of good form has meant that they will end the year camped inside the Champions League places.

Although Rashford's 11th goal of the season was enough to seal a second successive away win for Erik ten Hag's side, they could have won by a greater margin given the chances they created after the opener. After conceding, Wolves had no choice but to push higher up the pitch in pursuit of an equaliser, meaning they left spaces for the Reds to exploit.

United got into good positions on a number of occasions, particularly through the centre of the pitch, with substitute Van de Beek often leading the charge. The Dutchman had stepped off the bench with 81 minutes on the clock to replace Anthony Martial.

Van de Beek, who has struggled to have any kind of impact at Old Trafford since arriving from Ajax over two years ago, found himself in a cluster of situations when he had Rashford out wide, making an excellent run, but chose to ignore him and pick the wrong pass.

After one poor pass on the counter-attack in particular, when Van de Beek played a through ball through the middle of the pitch when Rashford wanted it out wide, the England forward was visibly furious and berated the Dutchman. The pair were pictured seemingly making amends after the final whistle.

Van de Beek's performance was heavily criticised by the United supporters watching, who made no secret of their thoughts on his poor decision-making.
