Why Manchester United vs AZ Alkmaar is not being played in Alkmaar's AFAS Stadion

AZ Alkmaar vs Manchester United in the Europa League on Thursday night isn't taking place at Alkmaar's home ground of the AFAS Stadion because one section of the roof recently collapsed.

United, who travel to the Netherlands in need of a positive result after struggling for form in recent weeks, will instead travel to the City of The Hague for the clash.

Alkmaar haven't been able to play on their home turf since August after a section of the roof collapsed during a storm and have since been playing their games in the Kyocera Stadium, home of ADO Den Haag.

A game wasn't being played at the time of the collapse and nobody was injured in the accident.

AZ released a statement on Tuesday confirming that the dismantling work on the roof of the stadium had begun after the plan was approved by the municipality of Alkmaar.

The stadium's roof is covered in solar panels so they must be dismantled in order to issue repairs.

It's estimated that the work will take six to eight weeks and the club hope to be back playing in their own city by mid-December.
