Why Manchester United target Jadon Sancho wasn't in England squad vs Croatia

Jadon Sancho failed to make the bench for England's opening Euro 2020 group stage match against Croatia, with no Manchester United player in the starting line-up either.

The United quartet of Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford, Dean Henderson and Harry Maguire all missed out from Gareth Southgate's 11 to face Croatia at Wembley, though Rashford came off the bench in the 1-0 Three Lions' win.

Maguire is ruled out through an ankle injury, with Southgate only able to pick a matchday squad of 23 from his 26-man travelling party. Chelsea's Ben Chilwell is the other player, along with Sancho and Maguire to miss out.

Rashford, Henderson and Shaw all made the bench, with Kieran Trippier preferred to the latter at left-back. Jordan Pickford starts in goal, with Kyle Walker, John Stones and Tyrone Mings joining United full-back target Trippier in the back four.

Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips started in midfield, with Mason Mount playing behind a front three of Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden.

The news of Sancho's omission was a surprise to many and it is not thought the Borussia Dortmund man is injured. He was simply not selected by Southgate after performing poorly in the warm-up friendlies. The England boss is obliged, by tournament rules, to select two goalkeepers on the bench, restricting his outfield options.

It may also be disappointing to many that Jack Grealish — another player United have coveted in the transfer market —was is only on the bench.

Before the game, Southgate said: "That was out front six in our games in March and we had some continuity from those games.

"They have an understanding and they have fabulous depth. We know Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish are really pushing for starting positions this is going to be a game where substitutes are more important than ever.

"We're very focused on today's game and prepared tactically for the game. We know everyone around is is hugely excited and the players are as well. We have to focus on the performance and put the other noise aside us to one side."

England XI: Pickford; Walker, Stones, Mings, Trippier; Rice, Phillips; Sterling, Mount, Foden; Kane.

Croatia XI: Livakovi; Vrsaljko, Vida, Caleta-Car, Gvardiol; Modric, Kovacic, Brozovic; Rebic, Perisic, Kramaric.
