Why Manchester United starlet Teden Mengi trained with senior England squad

Teden Mengi says it was a dream come true to be invited into training with the senior England side during the international break.

The Manchester United youngster bolstered the options to Gareth Southgate's side over the past few days as they played matches against Andorra and Hungary as part of World Cup qualifying.

Mengi, 19, was named in the England U20 side for their own matches over the international schedule before getting an unexpected invite to train with the senior squad at St. George's Park.

MEN Sport understand Mengi was temporarily promoted to the senior training squad because they needed another centre-back to fill in and he was identified as the most senior option available at that time.

The teenage defender has shone for United at youth level again this season and is likely to leave the club on loan in the January transfer window after a summer move to Derby County failed to materialise.

"Opportunities you only dream of as a young boy," Mengi tweeted on Wednesday. "It’s been an honour to train with the seniors during this international break.

"Back to club football now with motivation on a different level!"

Mengi could play for United's U21 side when they travel to face Sunderland in the Papa John's Trophy on Wednesday night and is even in contention to get a shock first-team call-up against Leicester this weekend.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side will be without Raphael Varane 'for a few weeks' while club captain Harry Maguire remains a doubt ahead of the match against his former club.
