Why Manchester United star Mason Greenwood is training separately

Mason Greenwood is training separately at Manchester United's training ground as part of the standard bubble induction process.

Greenwood, 18, returned to the Carrington training complex on Thursday afternoon after he was removed from the England squad for breaking COVID-19 protocols.

The MEN understands Greenwood spent around an hour at Carrington doing fitness work on Thursday and the club hope he can start training with the first-team squad early next week. Greenwood was on the premises for 15 minutes before United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left.

Greenwood is unlikely to travel to Villa Park on Saturday for United's only pre-season friendly with Aston Villa due to his late return to training. He did not report with other squad members on Friday morning and Greenwood does not have to quarantine as there is no travel restriction with Iceland.

Within 48 hours of making his England debut against Iceland last Saturday, Greenwood and Manchester City playmaker Phil Foden had to leave the camp after breaching the strict bio-bubble in Reykjavik.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Greenwood said: "Having now had the chance to reflect on what’s happened, I can only apologise to everyone for the embarrassment I have caused.

"It was irresponsible of me to break the COVID-19 protocols which are in place to protect players, staff and the public. In particular, I want to apologise to Gareth Southgate, for letting him down, when he had shown great trust in me.

"Playing for England was one of the proudest moments in my life and I only have myself to blame for this huge mistake. I promise my family, the fans, Manchester United and England that this is a lesson I will learn from."
