Why Manchester United signed Wout Weghorst

Manchester United have paid Burnley £2.6million to secure the services of Wout Weghorst on loan until the end of the season.

United do not have an option or obligation to sign Weghorst, who is under contract at Turf Moor until 2025.

Burnley have paid €2.825m to Besiktas to compensate the Turkish club after Weghorst's season-long loan was terminated midway through the season.

Sources say United's deputy football director Andy O'Boyle was "heavily involved" in negotiations.

United are covering Weghorst's salary in full but he was not registered in time to be available for selection against Manchester City on Saturday.

United manager Erik ten Hag identified Weghorst as a stop-gap support striker last month and the club contacted Burnley about his potential availability before the clubs' League Cup fourth round tie on December 21.

Ten Hag believes Weghorst can add a new dimension to an attack that is lacking out-and-out centre forwards. Anthony Martial, United's only No.9, is a doubt for the derby and has missed 13 weeks of the season through hamstring, Achilles and back injuries.

Weghorst scored eight goals in 16 games for Besiktas, having scored 70 in 144 games for Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga. Weghorst has tallied a respectable five goals in 19 appearances for the Netherlands but he only managed two in 20 for Burnley last term.

Ten Hag was keen to add Bologna forward Marko Arnautovic, a similar profile of forward to Weghorst, in early August and United had an offer rejected. The club withdrew their interest amid a fan backlash on integrity grounds.
