Why Manchester United players Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford changed positions vs Astana

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer downplayed his decision to switch Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood in the Europa League win over Astana.

Rashford started the game in the number nine role and the left-footed Greenwood lined up on the right, but the pair swapped positions for the second-half with the game goalless.

Astana goalkeeper Nenad Eric thwarted Rashford three times in the first-half and Greenwood fired narrowly wide before he breached the Kazakh side in the 73rd minute.

Tahith Chong, who began the tie on the left, moved to the right in the second-half until he and playmaker Angel Gomes were hooked on 68 minutes for Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard.

Rashford has said he does not see himself as a number nine but could continue there at West Ham on Sunday amid doubts over Anthony Martial's fitness, irrespective of Greenwood's impact.

"Well, I thought we created more chances and were more precise first-half," Solskjaer said of the tactical change. "We just didn't take them. Second-half, we had to play the percentages more and get more players around the box and hope we create enough chances to win."

Solskjaer made nine changes from United's 1-0 win over Leicester and a number of players who have played little this season struggled to perform, particularly Chong.

"I didn't make it easy for them by making so many changes. We've had a couple of games behind closed doors but that's different, now in front of the fans and the supporters, there's always a little bit added, you play for points.

"I didn't give them an easy ride but they're just going to grow and become better for it."
