Why Manchester United penalty claims were turned down at Wolves in the FA Cup

Manchester United had a penalty turned down in their FA Cup third round 0-0 draw at Wolves this evening and now it has been explained why.

Former referee Peter Walton has been on BT Sport discussing why the Reds had their claims turned away.

Defender Leander Dendoncker clashed with Brandon Williams after losing possession inside his own box.

Dendoncker and Williams tangled and United players aplenty claimed for a penalty, only for referee Paul Tierney to wave away the protests.

The decision was looked at by VAR but no clear and obvious error found, with Walton explaining the call during commentary on BT Sport.

"It's the sort of decision which causes a problem really," Walton told BT Sport.

"On one side, you could give a penalty kick, on another side, you couldn't give a penalty kick.

"In that case, VAR does not get involved. It's a conundrum really.

"For me, it wasn't a penalty kick, because there wasn't enough contact from Dendoncker on Williams."

VAR was also called into action late in the contest as Matt Doherty netted for Wolves, only for the goal to be ruled out for a handball.

Walton added: "You can clearly see that it hit his arm. It's unfortunate for him but the new rule clearly states that if the ball hits the arm on the way in, it's not a goal."
