Why Manchester United may face frustration in their bid to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff

Manchester United are facing complex battle to sign Sean Longstaff from Newcastle United.

Longstaff has been identified by Man United after a series of glowing scouting reports that landed on the desk of Ole Gunnar Solksjaer.

An official bid is yet to be tabled by the Red Devils but after Geordie coach Michael Carrick also recommended the youngster to Solksjaer, he is definitely on their wish-list.

Whether the 20-times English champions come in at the £25million price that has been bandied about in recent days remains to be seen.

But that could be the fee they are prepared to stretch to in their bid to snap up the Toon Academy product.

With no release clause in his contract Newcastle find themselves in a strong position on Longstaff and .

There is talk about a new improved contract for Longstaff but no negotiations have taken place since the end of the season.

Man United also face an awkward wait to see what the outcome of talks with Benitez will be.

The Spaniard currently has the final say on all transfer activity until June 30.

This is tightly written into his contract and this could make life difficult for Man United as they want a quick deal.

Should Benitez stay, and maintain the final say clause in his contract , he is likely to want to hold on to Longstaff - especially if he is uncertain incoming funds won't come his way.
