Why Manchester United loanee has returned to training

Manchester United welcomed back one of their loaned out players as they took part in a first-team training session on Tuesday.

Young goalkeeper Nathan Bishop was pictured back in action with the United first-team having joined League Two side Mansfield Town in the summer window.

Bishop, 21, had been given a few days off by the Football League club and took the opportunity to head back to Manchester to speak to coaches about his progress on loan so far.

The former Southend shot-stopper also took the chance to get involved with a senior training session in order to sharpen his match fitness ahead of his return to action against Oldham this weekend.

It's not the first time Bishop has returned to United following confirmation of his loan exit after the club requested to keep both he and Tahith Chong for the beginning of pre-season despite loaning them out to other clubs earlier in the summer window.

Earlier in the summer Mansfield manager Nigel Clough labelled Bishop as the best goalkeeper they could ever realistically hope for at that level.

"Nathan is a promising young goalkeeper with good experience in League One with Southend," he said. “For a young goalkeeper, to get those 30 games in League One was great for him. He showed a degree of maturity in that time, which will have hopefully improved further in the past 12 months.

“Although he hasn’t played too much in the past year, he has trained with Manchester United’s first team every day, which is the next best thing to playing matches.

“You cannot fail to improve in that environment with United’s coaches and playing staff. He is the best we can get in this position.”

Bishop has made 11 appearances for Mansfield so far this season, keeping one clean sheet.
