Why Manchester United have decided to sell Zidane Iqbal and include buyback and sell-on clause

Manchester United have included a buyback clause in the deal that will see Zidane Iqbal move to FC Utrecht for €1million, as well as a sell-on clause that entitles them to 40% of his next transfer fee.

The 20-year-old has completed his move to the Eredivisie, but United have the option to buy the midfielder back should his development accelerate in the Netherland.

Iqbal shone on United's pre-season tour last summer but he struggled to make a breakthrough last season, appearing on the bench 17 times but failing to make an appearance for Erik ten Hag's side.

United have decided to cash-in on Iqbal now with younger midfielder starting to train more regularly with the first-team, including 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo, but sources have described Iqbal's departure as a 'no lose situation'.

If the academy graduate fails to kick on at FC Utrecht then United believe they will have sold and banked the fee at the right time. If he develops significantly and is sold for a profit, then 40% of that will be heading to Old Trafford. Should Iqbal's career really take flight at Stadion Galgenwaard then United will have a clear run to re-sign him with a buyback clause in the agreement.

Iqbal looked a promising midfielder during the slower pace of pre-season games last summer, but after a year with the first-team it was decided he wasn't ready physically for the challenge of the Premier League. The Eredivisie is seen as being better suited to his long-term development.

His departure will also create more space for youngsters to train with the first-team, such as Mainoo, who made his senior debut under Ten Hag this season.

Following the announcement his move had been completed, FC Utrecht technical director Jordy Zuidam said: “Zidane is a very creative midfielder, with a very good understanding of the game. He can intercept balls, uses his body well in duels and is intelligent. In addition, he can be at the beginning of an attack, thanks to his good short and long pass. Zidane plays with guts and has a high speed of action.

“With his dribbling and passing, he is able to speed up the game. We are very proud that Zidane wants to take the next step in his development at FC Utrecht.”
