Why Manchester United great Roy Keane is wrong about David de Gea

Mark Bosnich has defended Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea after his mistake at Everton and subsequent criticism from Roy Keane.

De Gea saw a clearance closed down by Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the opening minutes at Goodison Park, with the ball flying off the striker's boot and into the back of the net.

At half time of the game - after Bruno Fernandes had levelled the scores - pundit and former United captain Roy Keane did not hold back in his criticism of De Gea, calling him arrogant.

"As a manager or a player, you'd kill him," Keane said. "It's crazy goalkeeping.

"He is being too clever. He takes too long. What is he waiting for? He has to make a decision and do it quickly. You have got an experienced goalkeeper and what is he waiting for? There is a bit of arrogance there.

"I would have lynched him at half time. I would have had no time for that carry-on. Keepers can make mistakes but there are no excuses for that."

Now, though, Bosnich has hit back at Keane, saying De Gea was showing confidence in his ability with the ball at his feet.

"It wasn't a good error but in terms of being arrogant, unless you know the person 100 per cent I don't really think you can make that type of call," Bosnich told Sky Sports News.

"In terms of the goalkeeping position, there's a very fine line between arrogance and confidence. Yes, it was a poor mistake but he came back from it very well to be fair."

Bosnich was referring to De Gea's late save to preserve a point for United, and the former Old Trafford stopper also praised Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for his own post-match defence of De Gea.

"That's what good managers do, they stick up for players publicly," Bosnich said.

"Privately it may have been different but publicly they stick up for all their players."
