Why Manchester United great Roy Keane has left Nottingham Forest

Former Manchester United star Roy Keane has left Nottingham Forest after just under five months as the assistant to Martin O'Neill.

The United great returned to coach for his former Republic of Ireland boss in January and helped oversee Forest's failed bid for the Championship play-offs this past season.

Keane was expected to be a part of O'Neill's staff for the 2019/20 campaign as well but has now parted ways with the Championship club.

"Working with Martin over the last few years has been a magnificent experience, one of my greatest in football both as a player and a coach and one I want to personally thank him for," Keane explained in a club statement.

Forest also placed on record their gratitude for the work Keane had done during his brief spell back at the club where everything started for him as a player, with the statement also wishing the Irishman the best for the future.

Paul Taylor of the Nottingham Post has since explained that Keane's desire to leave Forest was not down to his relationship with Forest or O'Neill and merely a case of the 47-year-old leaving so he can focus his intentions on 'returning to management'.

It's said that Keane is now pursuing other opportunities.
