Why Manchester United great Cristiano Ronaldo never received the Sir Alex Ferguson hairdryer treatment

Former Manchester United defender Jonathan Spector has revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson never gave the 'hairdryer' to Cristiano Ronaldo during his time at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo joined United from Sporting Lisbon in 2003 and helped them win three Premier League trophies and a Champions League title during his time at the club.

Ferguson was key in making the attacker one of the best players in the world and Spector has now explained how Ronaldo even managed to avoid the famous hairdyer.

"Some players responded well to an arm around, some players responded well when you got into them and he knew how to speak to players, so he was very clever with that," Spector told AmericanGambler.com.

"But I never saw him scream at Ronaldo, but I don't think it was preferential, he just knew the best way of getting the best out of his players.

"I think Ferguson was incredibly clever with that because he knew how to speak to players, that they might not all react the same way to criticism."

After arriving from Portugal, the youngster struggled to adapt to the physicality of the Premier League and Spector has admitted it was a 'frustrating' period for Ronaldo.

"I think he owes a lot for the player he is today not just to the manager but the players that were around him," Spector added.

"I think those formative years in his development to make him the finished product; he couldn't have been at a better place that Manchester United."
