Why Manchester United fans are being offered extra £102 'premium' seats for sold-out Barcelona clash

Manchester United have explained why fans are being offered tickets for over a hundred pounds for their sold-out clash with Barcelona.

The Reds take on the Catalan giants in the quarter-finals of the Champions League next Wednesday as reward for their comeback against PSG in Paris last month.

They received around 44,000 applications in the ballot and say that the match is one of the most over-subscribed home matches in the club's history.

Despite that, fans have been sent a message offering some extra tickets for an eye-watering £102.

The message from ticket office head Sam Kelleher said: "Thank you for your ticket application for our UEFA Champions League Quarter Final home game against FC Barcelona.

"The 2nd ballot has now taken place and your application has been unsuccessful. We received over 44,000 applications ahead of the first ballot, and unfortunately we are unable to accommodate all supporters.

"However given the volume of supporters that that applied, we have been able to release a small number of premium seats that are not usually available to official members. These seats are priced at £102 per ticket, with no concessions available."

It adds: "We apologise for any disappointment caused, and wish you luck in all future applications."

This drew criticism from many fans who accused the club of trying to 'cash in.'

One said on Twitter: "'Sorry you didn't get a ticket but here's some £102 seats you can have.'" F**k that."

Another said: "In other words, we plan to take full advantage of this unusual supply and demand situation."

However the club have said tonight the prices have their roots in the dispute between the clubs over the pricing of tickets for the away leg.

To United's dismay and despite protests from fan groups, Barcelona announced they planned to charge United fans 125 euros, around 102 pounds sterling, for the second leg at the Nou Camp.

In response, United said they would charge Barcelona fans the same amount and use the extra revenue to subsidise tickets for their 4,610 travelling fans, meaning they would only cost £75.

Old Trafford sources said UEFA competition rules mean clubs can only charge away fans prices which are also being offered to home fans.

So to facilitate the retaliatory pricing, they have taken a number of 'premium' seats, which are normally reserved for hospitality, and are offering them at the price Barcelona fans are paying,  to fans who were unsuccessful in the ballot.

In a statement when the prices were announced United said: "We believe that our travelling supporters are again being subjected to increased/excessive ticket prices from the host club.

"Similarly to Valencia in the group stages and Sevilla FC last season, we have again taken the difficult decision to charge FC Barcelona fans for the home leg at Old Trafford the same amount that FC Barcelona are charging for the away fixture (£102).

"We will use the additional revenue gained from this to subsidise our travelling support by paying the £27 price difference for each of our travelling supporters."

Barcelona insisted the prices were in line with that they charge other clubs.

However UEFA have since announced plans for a cap on away ticket prices similar to the scheme currently running in the Premier League.
