Why Manchester United Europa League draw puts them at disadvantage in Premier League

Manchester United will be travelling further for European group phase games than any other English club this season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have been drawn against Astana, Partizan Belgrade and AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League.

Travelling from Old Trafford to each ground and back again will see them rack up a massive 8,916 miles as the crow flies.

That’s over 2,000 miles more than any other club will be travelling.

The bulk of that total comes from the game in Astana, Kazakhstan, which is further east than places such as Baghdad and Saudi Arabia.

That journey alone is a 5,954 mile round trip.

Manchester City have the next highest amount of travelling at 6,754 miles.

Who Manchester United will face in the Europa League

That puts them marginally ahead of Wolves on 6,744 miles.

Tottenham have the next highest total (6,222 miles) followed by Liverpool (4,752 miles), Arsenal (2,896 miles) and Chelsea (2,416 miles).

Speaking over the summer about United's aspirations in Europe's secondary club competition, Reds boss Solskjaer said: "The Europa League is a great opportunity for us to win a trophy. You saw last year with Chelsea and Arsenal in the final, and of course we'll have to aim to get to the final, that's the ultimate aim.

"I'm sure we'll see the young kids, some of them. You've got Axel, you've got [Tahith] Chong, Angel [Gomes], Jimmy [Garner], Mason [Greenwood]. I don't know how many of them will play but we'll see.

"We have to get into the Champions League, we want to get into the Champions League. Is that by winning the Europa League? You take a chance but in a cup competition you never know.

"You might be unlucky one game and have four players injured, or hit the post and out three times. So we've got to be consistent in the league and see how far we get in the Europa."
