Why Manchester United aren't playing in the Premier League this weekend

International breaks aside, Manchester United won't be in action this weekend for the first time this season.

It's been a relentless schedule for most clubs due to the compressed nature of the campaign caused by last year's pandemic-induced delays, with rarely more than three days' rest between matches.

United have endured an especially tough past week, having had to play three games in just five days due to their game against Liverpool being rearranged.

United will welcome the rest as they followed up Sunday's victory over Aston Villa with defeats by Leicester City and Liverpool.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side aren't in action as they were originally scheduled to face Leicester this weekend, but the Foxes are instead competing in the FA Cup final against Chelsea.

That game was moved back to 11 May, freeing up United's players for some rest this weekend before they return to action at home to Fulham next Tuesday - a game which will see fans return to Old Trafford for the first time since March 2020.

United round off their league campaign with a trip to Wolves on Sunday 23 May, before the Europa League final against Villarreal in Gdansk three days later.
