Why Manchester United are wearing black armbands vs West Ham

Manchester United are wearing black armbands against West Ham United to honour former player Alex Dawson, who passed away last week at the age of 80.

The former striker spent four years at Old Trafford after being signed by legendary manager Sir Matt Busby and was one of the famous Busby Babes.

Dawson netted 45 goals in 80 league games for United and the club paid tribute to him by holding a minute's silence before their Premier League match with the Hammers, with both teams wearing black armbands throughout the game.

In a tweet on Friday United said: "Our deepest sympathies are with the loved ones of former United forward and Busby Babe, Alex Dawson, who has sadly passed away at the age of 80.

"He will be fondly remembered by all of us at the club.

"May he rest in peace."

Dawson was a crucial part in the rebuilding of the club following the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, which saw several of his teammates tragically lose their lives, as the Scotsman wasn't selected for the European fixture in Belgrade.

He went on to play for Preston North End, Bury, Brighton, Brentford and Corby Town.
