Why Man Utd will make Mason Greenwood wait before offering new contract

Manchester United are not planning on rewarding Mason Greenwood with a new deal after his first-team breakthrough.

Greenwood, 17, made four appearances for United last term and started against Cardiff on the final day.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted the teenager was United's 'best player by a mile' in the 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford.

Greenwood could become a regular in the first-team next term but United will make him wait before offering a new contract.

The striker is not 18 until October and the Red Devils are eager to learn from previous mistakes with younger players, reports the Sun.

The likes of Adnan Januzaj and Federico Macheda were both given big-money deals after breaking through but their form dipped afterwards.

It is claimed United bosses want to send out a clear message and ensure Greenwood 'keeps his feet on the ground'.

Meanwhile, Old Trafford legend Nicky Butt has urged Solskjaer, and the United support, not to demand too much from the teenager.

"Mason is a phenomenal talent. He’s done unbelievably well for me in the Under-19s this year and done well when he’s gone up into the Under-23s, he’s playing for England and he’s had his first-team debut," Butt told Inside United.

"As a club, we have to make sure we don’t go overboard on players like Mason.

"Yes, they’re very talented. Yes, they’re unbelievably good players. Yes, we hope they play for Manchester United . But how many times have we said that about a player in the last 15 years?

"There has always got to be a reality check. It’s got to be a case of okay, as and when it happens, it happens."
