Why Man Utd turned their attention to Daniel James instead of Arsenal transfer target

Daniel James has quickly become one of Manchester United's top transfer targets after being identified as the right man to add some pace to the Red Devils' attack.

But James wasn't the only wide forward on the club's radar - Manchester United were also looking at Bournemouth star Ryan Fraser.

Fraser is a long-term Arsenal target and will likely complete a transfer to the Emirates this summer to provide the Gunners with some much needed width next season.

Manchester United ending their pursuit of the winger and turning their attention to James will certainly make things easier for cash-strapped Arsenal.

But according to the Evening Standard, the Red Devils made the decision to ditch interest in Fraser and look at James for a very similar reason.

The paper claims that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer considers Swansea City star James to be a cheaper alternative to tried and tested Premier League winger Fraser.

While the Bournemouth forward is rated at around £25million, James is believed to be available for £10million less than this figure.

The Swansea star enjoyed a spectacular second half to his season, and managed a total of seven assists in the Championship.

His boss Graham Potter said of him: "If you look at the performance, if you are being honest it's above Championship level.

"That was as good an individual performance as I have ever witnessed when you consider Stoke are a good team with good players who are well organised and do not concede many goals.

"I have run out of superlatives to be honest. It was his fourth game in 11 days. His ability to run, his desire to run, his courage and then his quality - we are just lucky to witness it."
