Why Man Utd's transfer moves for Jadon Sancho and Matthijs de Ligt have stalled

Manchester United are in the market for some new recruits this summer as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sets about rebuilding his Red Devils team.

The Old Trafford club are expected to part company with some big names, and have already confirmed Ander Herrera and Antonio Valencia will be leaving when their contracts expire next month.

Manchester United have been linked with a number of players already, but two names that continue to crop up are Dortmund's Jadon Sancho and Ajax's Matthijs de Ligt.

Former Manchester City forward Sancho was nailed on to join the Red Devils this summer only a few months ago.

Man United favourite Rio Ferdinand made it clear he'd love to see Sancho play for his former team on Twitter and remarkably the Dortmund star re-tweeted him.

But the deal could now be dead in the water, despite Sancho suggesting he wants to return to the Premier League.

The reason is Sancho, 19, wants Champions League football next season and Manchester United are unable to offer him this.

De Ligt is another player on United's radar, but competition for the 19-year-old centre-back is fierce and Barcelona are currently in pole position to sign him.

The issue of no Champions League football also impacts the De Ligt deal, given the fact the Ajax man has proven himself more than capable of playing in Europe's elite competition.

Finally, Manchester United have reservations over the player's weight.
