Why Man City will have to wait to lift Premier League trophy if they beat Brighton

Manchester City will be forced to wait to lift the Premier League trophy if they are crowned champions this weekend.

City need a win at Brighton to retain the title, with Liverpool hosting Wolves in their final clash at Anfield.

The Premier League are preparing for all eventualities with two trophies and two sets of winners' medals primed for Anfield and the Amex.

The real trophy has been kept at the Etihad over the course of the season with a replica making its way around the country in TV studios.

While Liverpool will get their hands on the replica trophy if they emerge victorious, City will claim the real thing - although they will have to wait.

What Pep Guardiola's telling Man City stars with the title just 90 minutes away

Brighton have survived in the Premier League again and Chris Hughton and his players will be congratulated at full-time.

The Brighton player and staff will return to the pitch after the final whistle to take part in a lap of appreciation to toast staying up.

The trophy lift will only take place once those celebrations have ended.

City go into the final day in pole position with history on the side of Pep Guardiola's men.

On all the previous seven occasions the title was won on the final day, the side going into the last match top of the table has held on and finished the season there.

Brighton goalkeeper Mat Ryan said: "The most surreal thing is having friends and family who are Liverpool supporters and having the opportunity to have such a big influence on history.

"I remember the hype around that City and QPR game those years ago and how the whole world was invested in it.

“It’s nice to be part of that. If we can disturb the party, it would be nice.”
