Why Man City remain confident after UEFA verdict on shock Champions League ban

Manchester City remain confident and do not consider Friday's shock ruling to be the final ruling on their UEFA investigation.

The football world was stunned as Pep Guardiola's side were handed a two-year ban from the Champions League and other European competitions as the verdict was returned on the Financial Fair Play investigation.

But from a City point of view, UEFA have played judge, jury and executioner in this extraordinary scene. That was seen both in the unprecedented decision taken by City to go to the Court of Arbitration for Sport before their punishment had been announced, and in the bitter arguments between the parties laid bare in the court documents released this week.

It is why the immediate response to Friday's ruling was that the decision from UEFA's adjudicatory chamber was that they were "disappointed by not surprised".

It is why the first paragraph included the line that they have "always anticipated the ultimate need to seek out an independent body and process to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence in support of its position".

And it is why when they return to CAS, which will be done swiftly - their last hearing was denied on the basis of all legal avenues had not been exhausted, which no longer applies - they are confident that a fair an independent hearing will clear them.

UEFA have struck a serious blow by handing out such a severe punishment, but City do not expect that to be the final word on the matter.
