Why Man City player Leroy Sane will get Carabao Cup medal despite not playing

Manchester City have ordered extra Carabao Cup medals to recognise players that weren't able to play a part in their Wembley victory over Aston Villa.

Goals from Sergio Aguero and Rodri gave the Blues a hard fought 2-1 victory in the league cup final on Sunday to ensure Pep Guardiola's side won the competition for a third consecutive year.

Both the winners and losers from the showpiece event got 23 medals from the EFL on the day - including for the manager and other coaches - but are allowed to purchase other medals should they wish.

City have ensured that a number of players that were not in the matchday squad at Wembley will receive a medal. They include first team members such as Leroy Sane and Scott Carson that were not in the first team squad, Angelino and Ian Carlo Poveda who have since moved out on loan to RB Leipzig and Leeds respectively, and any academy player that was involved in any round of the competition.

Guardiola took the opportunity to praise his squad after the final in a press conference that touched on the achievements of a squad that have now won eight of the last nine domestic trophies.

"When you win titles it’s because everyone is involved," he said. "It's not just 11 players. With the way Bernardo came in [off the bench] today or Raheem Sterling making a decisive action at the Bernabeu, the competition is a starting XI but everyone must be ready."
