Why Man City did not rival Liverpool FC for Thiago Alcantara transfer

Pep Guardiola says Manchester City did not try to sign his former Barcelona star Thiago Alcantara.

The Spain international midfielder is on the verge of a  bargain £20million move to Liverpool - and when his availability became known the Blues were linked with him.

But City never made a move for the player, even though Guardiola made him his number one target when he took over at Bayern Munich in 2013.

Guardiola famously told the Bayern board "Thiago or nothing" when he joined the Bundesliga outfit, and Thiago was a key man as they won a hat-trick of Bundesliga titles.

City have prioritised replacing Leroy Sane and bringing in two new centre backs this summer, and Guardiola said his faith in young England star Phil Foden was a major reason for having no interest in Thiago.

"We have enough players in this position," he said when asked why City had not made a move for the 29-year-old.

"I am happy that Thiago comes to England because England is going to enjoy a really good player. Phil can play in that position, striker as well and wingers..."

Thago is due to complete his move to Anfield today in a deal expected to rise to £27million in add-ons.

The Blues have already brought in defender Nathan Ake for £40million and winger Ferran Torres for £21milion.
