Why Man City can host Champions League home leg but Liverpool can't - despite both clubs facing German sides

The impact of Covid-19 continues to be felt in football and across wider society - but travel restrictions have handed Manchester City a welcome advantage.

That's because their Champions League last-16 second leg against Borussia Monchengladbach will take place on home turf at the Etihad Stadium on March 16.

Having won the first leg 2-0 - with that game having to be moved to Budapest amid the ongoing pandemic - Pep Guardiola's side already have one foot in the quarter-finals.

But, unlike Liverpool, current guidelines have given City a helping hand as the runaway Premier League leaders target an elusive European crown.

But why, exactly, is that the case?

Also boasting a 2-0 advantage ahead of what should be their own home leg, Liverpool must now travel to the same venue - the Puskas Arena - as both they and City, plus their opponents, did in their respective first legs last month.

That's because there are, as things stand, different travel restrictions in the regions the clubs are situated in.

Jurgen Klopp's side were denied permission to travel to Saxony, where RB Leipzig are situated, because of fears of a coronavirus strain, while their opponents would have to quarantine for 10 days upon their return to Germany, if the second leg had been able to go ahead at Anfield.

No such guidelines are currently in place in North Rhine-Westphalia, though, which means Monchengladbach are open to travel to the Etihad later this month.
