Why major parties will not stand against Nigel Farage in Clacton by-election

  • Nigel Farage has triggered a by-election in Clacton by resigning, stating it offers voters a chance to challenge the establishment.
  • Major political parties, including Labour , the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats , Green Party, and Restore Britain, will not be fielding candidates in the Clacton by-election .
  • Opponents have criticised Farage, with foreign secretary Yvette Cooper calling it a “political tantrum” and others suggesting it is a “fake” election and “gimmick” to distract from serious allegations.
  • As it stands, it seems Mr Farage’s only opponents could be Count Binface and any independent candidates.
  • Farage faces scrutiny over donations, including alleged funding from convicted criminal George Cottrell for security and staffing; he is also under investigation by the standards commissioner regarding a £5 million gift received from crypto-billionaire Christopher Harborne.
