Why Luke Shaw will miss Manchester United's Champions League second leg at Barcelona

Manchester United will be without defender Luke Shaw for their Champions League quarter-final second leg at Barcelona after picking up his third yellow card of this season's competition.

Shaw was one of five United players at risk of suspension going into the first leg at Old Trafford, along with Ashley Young, Ander Herrera, Nemanja Matic, and Antonio Valencia.

Only Shaw and Young were in the matchday squad to face Barcelona, and it was Shaw's own-goal that put them behind early on as the visitors took control of the tie.

And Shaw's evening got worse when he hauled down Lionel Messi on United's left to collect his third booking of the season in the Champions League.

That means he picks up an automatic one-match suspension, which will come into effect for the second leg at the Nou Camp.

The latest suspension adds to Shaw's two-match ban in the Premier League for ten bookings this campaign, meaning he will miss United's next three fixtures against West Ham, Barcelona and Everton.

He will next be available for the Manchester derby on April 24.
