Why Luke Shaw is starting for Manchester United vs Man City

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has explained his two Manchester United changes for today's Manchester derby clash at the Etihad Stadium.

United have brought back Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw back from injury to feature , with Ashley Young and Mason Greenwood — who both performed well in the midweek win over Tottenham — dropping to the bench.

And Solskjaer revealed to MUTV neither player were ready to start two games within three days, with Shaw making his first league start since August.

He said: "Mason did well [versus Tottenham], Ashley did well, but Mason is a young boy and it was his first start, Ash is getting on a little bit and I don't think it would have been fair to play him again with only two days of recovery, so Luke is ready.

"He played over in Astana and he's trained really well. I hope we'll see the best of Luke."

Solskjaer is looking for United to build on the momentum gained by beating Spurs 2-1 in midweek, with another huge match for his side today.

"It's a boost, of course," he added on the Wednesday night Old Trafford win.

"Too many times this year we've been in winning positions and it's been clawed back to a draw where we should have been two or three up. We felt the same against Tottenham, we should have been 2-0 or 3-0 up. But we got the win and it's a confidence boost for us."

"It [the Manchester derby] does have a little bit extra, you have to be honest enough. We're playing against a fantastic team who's got the tools to play any sort of way. Pep's done absolutely fantastic with the way he coaches teams.

"But for us, we know it's special, a Manchester derby, to come up against the best team in the country, for me. We have to make sure we make it special."

United team: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw; McTominay, Fred; James, Lingard, Rashford; Martial.
