Why long-form journalism makes a difference

There is strength in depth, and also quality in quantity. That message, from George Brock on his blog, is one all journalists should take to heart.

In fairness, most journalists already know it. But it's a lesson publishers need to learn too because they are increasingly reluctant to allow writers to spend time producing long-form journalism.

The benefits of giving journalists time and space were illustrated this week by Rolling Stone's agenda-setting profile of General Stanley McChrystal, leading to his being fired by President Obama.

Brock extends his point beyond that single piece of observational reportage to suggest that there is no substitute for journalists steeped in the knowledge of their subject.
