Why Liverpool won't wear new red home kit in the Champions League final against Tottenham

Despite unveiling their 2019/20 kit just last month, Liverpool will not wear the new shirt in the Champions League final against Tottenham tonight.

Many fans were surprised Jurgen Klopp's side didn't don the latest jerseys for the final home game of the Premier League season, a move the Reds have sometimes made in previous season.

Instead, they wore the 2018/19 home kit and will repeat that in Madrid this evening as they look to secure the club's sixth European crown.

Liverpool unveiled their new 2019/20 home kit last month, which with its white pinstripes gives a nod to the Reds team that won a treble of trophies, including the European Cup, in 1984.

The kit is on sale now on the official Liverpool website.

Liverpool will however stick with this season’s New Balance version for the Champions League showpiece against Premier League rivals Spurs on June 1.

Under UEFA rules, clubs have to state at the start of each season which kits they will use in the competition and changes cannot be made unless there has been a change of main sponsor.

The 2018/19 kit has proven the most successful in the club's history. Indeed, Liverpool announced in February they had temporarily ran out of stock for their online store, such was the demand.

As with last season ahead of the showpiece against Real Madrid, there won’t be a special Champions League final edition of the shirt available, although the current kit is still on sale in limited numbers.
