Why Liverpool won't lift the Premier League trophy even if they win it on Sunday

Liverpool could win a first Premier League title on Sunday.

But the Reds players won't get the chance to lift the real trophy this weekend - they'll instead have to celebrate with a replica.

The reason for this is that there is, as you may have guessed, only one Premier League trophy. And well, there are two teams in contention to win it this weekend: Manchester City and Liverpool.

As things stand, City are favourites to lift the trophy as they sit at the top of the table, one point ahead of rivals Liverpool.

As a result, the real Premier League trophy will be in Brighton this weekend in preparation of Manchester City winning the title at the Amex Stadium.

A replica trophy, meanwhile, will be on standby at Anfield should Manchester City slip up against the Seagulls and Liverpool beat Wolves.

This would enable the Reds players to celebrate their title win on the day before they eventually get their hands on the real trophy at a later date.

The replica trophy is identical in design and material - solid sterling silver - to the real thing, according to The Times.

Real winners' medals, meanwhile, have been sent to both grounds.
