Why Liverpool won't hold annual Players' Awards this year

Liverpool's hectic schedule has led to the club deciding not to hold their annual Players' Awards this year.

For the past five years the Reds have put on a glittering black tie ceremony to celebrate the achievements of the first-team, academy and women's teams.

However, with Jurgen Klopp's side launching a sustained challenge for glory both domestically and in Europe finding a suitable date this time around proved to be problematic.

The event, which has taken place in the new Main Stand at Anfield for the past two seasons, has traditionally been held in either the week before or after the final Premier League game of the season.

That wasn't possible this time around with Liverpool's battle with Manchester City for the title going right down to the wire.

After the heartache of coming so close to ending the club's 29-year wait for the top-flight crown, the players are being granted some time off this week prior to next week's training camp in Spain as they gear up for the Champions League final against Tottenham in Madrid on June 1.

Holding the awards after the final isn't an option due to the international fixtures. England face Holland in the semi-final of the UEFA Nations League in Portugal just five days after the Champions League final.

In order to recognise the achievements of the first-team, academy and women's teams over the course of this season the club intend to create an interactive digital experience where supporters around the world can vote for their favourite players and goals.

The digital players awards are set to be announced prior to the Champions League final. If the schedule allows then Liverpool may look to hold a celebratory event at Anfield early next season.
