Why Liverpool vs Norwich second half was delayed in Premier League at Anfield

The second half of Liverpool's Premier League clash with Norwich was delayed by a number of minutes due to technical issues - but the Premier League insisted it was not due to VAR.

With the system being used for the first time in the Premier League, an issue with the headset of one of the assistant referees saw fans quick to blame VAR as the resumption of the game was delayed.

But the Premier League posted a tweet explaining: "There was a slight delay to the restart as the officials' headsets were repaired - this issue was unrelated to VAR."

Fans were left baffled and boos rang around Anfield with both sets of players stood around waiting on the pitch for several minutes.

Eventually, the faulty headset was replaced and the action resumed after there had been fears the second half might have to take place without VAR due to the technical difficulties.

It led to frustrated supporters questioning what was going on and branding VAR a "farce" as they faced an extended wait to see the second half.

However, Sky Sports commentator Jamie Carragher insisted that "as a nation, we've got to get behind it" and continued to back the use of the technology despite the teething problems.

Jurgen Klopp has been a vocal supporter of introducing VAR in the past and appeared relaxed as he joked with officials as they tried to solve the issues.

As it happens, it seems the headset issue was not linked to communication with the VAR control room, despite the criticism it received.

The game was all but over as a contest before the action got back underway, with Liverpool's ruthless first half performance putting them 4-0 up.

A Grant Hanley own goal gave them an early lead before Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Divock Origi struck before half-time.
