Why Liverpool vs Arsenal and Chelsea vs Man United kick off times have changed in Carabao Cup

There will be something slightly unusual about Liverpool's Carabao Cup game against Arsenal tonight.

And not just because it will involve a Reds side containing several players making a competitive Anfield debut.

Jurgen Klopp's European champions entertain the Gunners for a game that will kick-off at 7.30pm.

The unusually early time is a consequence of Sky Sports wanting to show live both the Anfield showdown and the fourth round clash between Chelsea and Manchester United.

Sky have the rights to show two live games in this round, and would normally broadcast one on the Tuesday and another on the Wednesday.

However, they are keen to show the two blockbusting games which feature four of the established Premier League top six.

With Liverpool hosting Tottenham Hotspur in the top flight last Sunday and then due at Aston Villa on Saturday, tonight is the only date available given the recovery and preparation time required between those two fixtures.

Arsenal, too, were in action on Sunday, drawing 2-2 at home to Crystal Palace due to having featured in the Europa League last Thursday.

And the same applies to Manchester United, who won at Norwich City 3-1 on Sunday.

Given the clash of dates between the two Carabao Cup games, the starting times will be staggered to allow those watching at home a chance to catch as much of the action as possible.

Liverpool's game was therefore brought forward to 7.30pm, while Chelsea's game against United starts at 8.05pm.

Staggered kick-off times will become a more regular feature in December due to Amazon Prime's scheduling of their games.

Indeed, the Anfield derby against Everton on December 4 has been pushed back to 8.15pm for that very reason, with that night's five other games - all of which can also be viewed live on Amazon Prime - beginning at 7.30pm.

Carabao Cup kick off times for Wednesday night

Liverpool vs Arsenal - 7.30pm

Aston Villa vs Wolves - 7.45pm

Chelsea vs Man United - 8.05pm
