Why Liverpool's win over Barcelona meant Reds missed out on £5m windfall

Liverpool booked their place in the Champions League final in the most dramatic fashion on Tuesday evening as they upset the odds to come back against Barcelona .

The Reds were 3-0 down after the first leg at the Nou Camp and staring at a near-impossible task to reach successive finals.

But two goals apiece for Divock Origi and Gini Wijnaldum sent Anfield into raptures and saw Jurgen Klopp's side win 4-0 on the night to dump the Catalan giants out.

There were a host sub-par performances for the Blaugrana, notably Philippe Coutinho who was making his first return to Anfield since leaving Merseyside for Barcelona.

Liverpool send four-word message to Tottenham ahead of Champions League final

Part of the deal which saw Coutinho head for the Blaugrana stipulated that, should Barcelona win the Champions League this term, Liverpool would receive €5.23million.

So Barca will not have to pay that sum, although reaching the final would have recouped them €15million, plus an extra €4million for winning it.

Coutinho has struggled to live up to his price tag since joining Barca - an initial £105million reaching up to £142million with various add-ons.

He has scored 21 goals in 74 appearances so far during his time at the Nou Camp.

Liverpool will face Tottenham in the final at Atletico Madrid's Wanda Metropolitano after Spurs launched a similarly dramatic comeback against Ajax.

Mauricio Pochettino's side were 2-0 down at half-time of the second leg, a 3-0 aggregate deficit, put progressed on away goals thanks to Lucas Moura's hat-trick.
