Why Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson did not swap shirts with Barcelona's Lionel Messi after Champions League clash

Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson has revealed the reason he didn't trade shirts with Barcelona's Lionel Messi.

The Argentina international scored a superb brace at the Camp Nou as Ernesto Valverde's side ran out 3-0 winners in the Champions League semi-final first leg.

But Barcelona were left stunned following the Reds' historic 4-0 comeback at Anfield, as Jurgen Klopp's men rallied against all the odds to book a place in Saturday's final.

Speaking to the Daily Mail the midfielder described what it was like coming up against Messi.

Henderson said: "As it turned out, I came on quite early as Naby Keita got injured. It was the first time I had been on a pitch with Lionel Messi.

"You don’t think to yourself 'Oh my God - that's him' but there's no question he plays the game differently to when you see him on TV. He’s so fast.

"Thinking about his free-kick now, I still can’t believe he scored it. I actually thought he was going to take it short.

"I’ve told you how good I think Ali (Alisson Becker) is but Messi put that shot in the one area Ali couldn’t protect. The whip, the pace, the precision - It was absolutely perfect."

Henderson will captain Liverpool in back-to-back European finals as they come up against Tottenham in Madrid this weekend.

The England international revealed the reason he never asked for the iconic No. 10's jersey.

"Roy Keane told me when I was at Sunderland that if you ask for someone’s shirt, it looks like you are in awe of them," Henderson added.

"As it turned out, I came home with Luis Suarez’s shirt. Luis is a good lad and he gave me it as a gesture as we had played together for Liverpool. I don’t know what he’s done with mine!"
