Why Liverpool are growing in confidence in Matthijs de Ligt transfer rat race

Barcelona are favourites to sign Matthijs de Ligt when the summer transfer window swings open in two days time.

The Catalan giants have already signed De Ligt's Ajax and Holland team-mate Frenkie de Jong for £67million, and are winning the race to land the centre-back.

De Ligt's agent Mino Raiola recently spoke to representatives from Barcelona in Monaco, according to Oriol Domenech, talking on the Club de la Mitjanit programme on Esport 3.

During the meeting the super-agent and club agreed on the figures to complete the deal, and the Spanish club are confident of winning the race for De Ligt's signature.

But Mundo Deportivo is now reporting that Barcelona are slightly fearful of Liverpool.

The publication claims that Jurgen Klopp's Reds are buoyed by the fact Barcelona are yet to officially sign the centre-back.

De Ligt is also said to still be seeking assurances over how much playing time he'll get at the Nou Camp before he makes his final decision on who to join.

Not only this, but Liverpool could use Virgil van Dijk - De Ligt's international centre-back partner - as a bartering tool to beat Barcelona to their top summer target.
