The Detroit Lions have selected Iowa Tight End T.J Hockenson with the 8th overall selection in the 2019 NFL Draft.
A tight end may seem a bit like a reach but nobody can question the talent of Hockenson. He is the best blocking tight end in this class and is like an extra offensive lineman on the end. As a receiver, he is a talented route runner who understands how to separate and get open at the top of his routes. He is as safe as it comes as a prospect and at the very worst, he’ll be a solid starting tight end in this league.
For the Lions, taking the chance on Hockenson could turn out to be quite beneficial. He is an all around very good player and should be a great safety blanket for the Lions and Matthew Stafford. He can be an extra blocker in the run game and really help Kerryon Johnson break out going into year two. He should also provide a major boost to the passing game and help out Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones as well. Excellent pick for the Lions.
