Why England Lionesses won't want to face Germany in Euro final – and their history

The Lionesses have secured a space in the 2022 UEFA European Women's Championship final, marking their first major tournament final since 2009.

England have had an unbeaten run on the journey towards potential Euros victory and got through to the final after a spectacular performance that saw them thrash Sweden 4-0. Now, Leah Williamson and co are busy preparing themselves for an intense final that could see them bringing football home while playing on British soil.

England will either play Germany or France in Sunday's match, which will be decided tonight (Wednesday) as the remaining teams battle it out for their spot. As they come closer to victory, we've taken a look at the Lionesses' past record when it comes to international tournaments and why they might be worried about potentially coming up against Germany in the final.

Have England women's team ever made it to the Euros final before?

England women's team have made it to the final of the Euros twice before.

They very nearly won the first-ever women's Euros in 1984 when they made it to the final, but they were defeated by Sweden on penalties. In 1987 the Lionesses nearly made it to the final again, but they were beaten by Sweden yet again in the semi-finals.

But this year, the England squad could be in with a chance as they've finally overcome Sweden in the tournament, beating them 4-0 in the quarter-finals. The last time that England's women's side reached the Euros final was in 2009, Arsenal legend Faye White’s team went up against Germany in the final but unfortunately they lost the trophy after being beaten 6-2.

Why England might not want to play Germany in the Euros final

After having lost to Germany during their last chance at Euro victory, the women's team may be dreading the thought of going up against them in another final.

But it's not just their history with Germany that could make them nervous, the German team also have a phenomenal record when it comes to the Euros.

Germany's women's team have won the title a record eight times, winning every tournament from 1989 to 2013, apart from one loss in 1993 when they came fourth place.

In 2017 they lost the title again and ended their journey in the quarter-finals, but they could return to the finals this year in an attempt to claim back their crown/

Have England ever made it to the World Cup final before?

England women's team have competed in five FIFA World Cups.

Unfortunately, they have never won the competition or made it to the finals, but they have always reached at least the quarter-finals. During the last two World Cups, the Lionesses have been more successful and have made it to the semi-finals on both occasions.

In 2015 they missed out on a spot in the final after a last-minute own goal that saw Japan through, and in 2019 they won every game until they narrowly lost to the USA in the semi-final.

Despite falling short of landing a major honour thus far, the Lionesses have a great chance to end their wait and land the European Championships at Wembley on Sunday.
