Why Les Ferdinand believes Joelinton will prove to be a 'real asset' for Newcastle United

Newcastle United legend Les Ferdinand remains convinced Joelinton will prove to be a success at St James' Park.

The Magpies' record signing has endured a tough start to life in English football, scoring just three times in black and white so far.

The £40m signing from Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim has struggled to make an impact as a lone frontman, and Steve Bruce has at times opted to field the 23-year-old on the wing.

United's woes in front of goal has led to speculation that the Magpies' head coach will look to strengthen his attack in the next transfer window, having publicly stated his desire to bring in up to four "quality" players.

Despite Joelinton's poor start to life on Tyneside, Ferdinand believes the Brazilian possess "all of the attributes" to succeed in England.

Speaking as part of Give to Local's #InspiredToGive campaign, the former England international has urged supporters to continue to back the 23-year-old.

Ferdinand said: "I’ve seen Joelinton play in the past - before he signed for Newcastle - and he’s a modern-day centre forward who can play down the left and the right as well as through the centre.

"He actually prefers playing on the left or right rather than through the middle, but I accept that he has the look of a traditional centre forward.

"He’s got all of the attributes to do well at St James’s Park and I honestly believe he can come back stronger given the chance.

"There are huge pressures associated with wearing the number nine shirt for Newcastle when you consider the people who have worn it before.

"I hope the fans continue to get behind Joelinton and realise that just because he’s not a traditional number nine it doesn’t mean that he can’t be a real asset. He works so hard for the team and deserves support."

Ferdinand is one of a host of sporting figures to back the GiveToLocal initiative which launched last year with the aim of putting £5m into grassroots football clubs.

Based in North Tyneside, GiveToLocal has already supported 32,000 registered teams across the UK.

Now, eight more sports including cricket, basketball, volleyball, hockey, swimming, netball and both codes of rugby – in addition to local businesses - can benefit from the #InspiredToGive initiative.
