Why Leeds United will not host under-23s' cup semi-final with Newcastle United at Elland Road

Elland Road still has a part to play in Leeds United’s under-23s campaign despite being overlooked for a major cup semi-final later this month.

On Sunday afternoon the club announced Guiseley’s Nethermoor Park would host the Premier League Cup semi-final with Newcastle United, which left some fans confused.

After coming through a difficult group, which included the Magpies and Southampton, the Whites saw off Fulham on penalties in the last-16 before beating Burnley in the quarter-finals.

After those heroics and confirming top spot in Premier League Professional Development League Group North, the youths’ stock is high.

Given the gravity of a semi-final, many fans felt Elland Road would be a good fit for attracting thousands of supporters.

However, it is understood the club has decided on Guiseley because that has been their home for the majority of the season, they are comfortable there and like it feeling packed.

Furthermore, Elland Road will be used for the home leg of the Professional Development League final which will be played against the Group South winners in due course - a bigger match than the Newcastle tie.

There is also one eye on what the Whites may do if they advance to the Premier League Cup final. That too is a two-legged encounter, one of which would be staged at Elland Road.

The semi-final starts at 7pm on April 23.
