Why Leeds United target Ryan Kent was absent from Liverpool's pre-season defeat to Napoli

As teams in England's top two tiers prepare for the final ten days of the transfer window, supporters are jumping on every morsel of information coming out of their club for clues on any potential late signings.

Whether it's a 'cryptic' tweet, a fan sighting at a rival club or a passive-aggressive updating of a social media bio, very little escapes the watchful eye of fans on Twitter.

So it was little surprise when Leeds United fans' collective ears pricked up when Liverpool confirmed their matchday squad for their friendly against Napoli at Murrayfield in Edinburgh on Sunday afternoon.

Ryan Kent emerged as one of Leeds' main reported transfer targets at the start of the summer, with the club said to be interested in bringing in the Reds winger, who last year impressed on loan at Rangers.

Steven Gerrard's side have also been linked with another loan move for the 22-year-old, with the interested parties being forced to wait until Liverpool confirmed their plans for him.

Jurgen Klopp has chosen to include Kent in the bulk of the club's pre-season friendlies this summer, not least the win at Bradford City which was overseen by Marcelo Bielsa who was present at Valley Parade.

"Ryan had sensational moments in the Sevilla game – one-on-one situations are his big strength," Klopp said last week .

"He is a wonderful kid, a wonderful player.

"Very good moments in pre-season, but it is for all the boys always a big challenge as well to show up.

"They probably feel under pressure, which they shouldn’t but it is natural that it happens. I am happy about that, absolutely."

Kent had initially been named in Klopp's squad for the friendly against the Serie A side, but when they club confirmed the starting XI and substitutes, his name was conspicuously absent.

As soon as Leeds and Rangers fans' tongues got wagging about Kent's future, our sister title the Liverpool Echo reported that Kent was suffering from an undisclosed illness.

Liverpool's next pre-season friendly takes place on Wednesday evening, when they host French side Lyon, before the club face Manchester City in next weekend's Community Shield.
