Why Leeds United could face Lee Bowyer and Jonathan Woodgate next season

With yet another season in the Championship confirmed for Leeds United, attention will soon turn towards who the club will be facing next season.

The EFL's fixtures will be released on June 20 at 9am, with 22 of the 24 teams taking part currently known. Added to this list will be the Championship play-off final losers and the winners of the League One final.

There will be plenty of familiar faces in the division as the Whites get set for a ninth consecutive year in the second tier, but two ex-Elland Road favourites could make a return to their former haunt.

Jonathan Woodgate and Lee Bowyer were integral parts of David O'Leary's side that reached the Champions League semi-finals, but also played their part in the club's subsequent downfall, when the pair were embroiled in a lengthy court case.

Now long retired, the two have moved into coaching and could both potentially be in the opposition manager's seat in the Leeds United dugout next season.

Woodgate is currently part of the coaching staff at Middlesbrough and following Tony Pulis' departure from the Riverside on Friday morning, has been installed as the favourite to land the job.

According to our colleagues at Gazette Live , Woodgate is the 1/3 favourite to take over from Pulis, ahead of form Boro boss Aitor Karanka (5/1) ex-Boro defender Michael Reiziger (8/1) and former Brighton boss Chris Hughton (9/1).

Should Woodgate get the job, then it will be his first job in senior management.

Another former Leeds man in his first managerial role is Bowyer, who took the reigns at Charlton at the end of last season, initially as caretaker before landing the job on a permanent basis in September.

Bowyer led the Addicks to a third-placed finish in League One this season his side will take a 2-1 lead into the second leg of their play-off semi-final tie against Doncaster on Friday evening.

Sunderland await the winners in the final, meaning that two players who played a huge part in Leeds' history in the early years of the 21st century could be back at Elland Road in next year's centenary campaign.
