Why Leeds Bradford Airport could soon become a 'silent terminal'

The chaos and blaring noise that often comes with checking in for your flight could soon become a thing of the past at Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA).

Passengers arriving at the Yeadon terminal from Thursday, August 15 to Saturday, August 17 were confronted with a far quieter airport than usual, as tannoy announcements were majorly scaled back during a trial to make LBA a silent terminal.

It meant that late boarding calls and emergency announcements were the only messages conveyed through the speakers, a move which was all part of a drive to improve passenger wellbeing by creating a quieter travel experience.

LBA is the latest airport to trial the unique silent terminal system, but only a few have rolled it out permanently so far. Airports in Helsinki, Munich and Sydney have massively toned down the number of messages played out over the tannoy system.

Airport chiefs at LBA say they received a positive response during their trial this summer, with all passengers told about the changes at the check-in desk on arrival, so they knew to check the departures board themselves.

A spokesperson for LBA said: "We are continually reviewing our customer experience and the silent terminal trial was designed to create a quieter travel experience and enhance passenger wellbeing.

"We continued to support those requiring special assistance and of course want to maintain our airport’s inclusivity.

"We have received a lot of positive feedback from passengers on the trial."
