Why Kyle Walker and Kevin De Bruyne did not travel with Man City squad to Olympiacos

Kyle Walker and Kevin De Bruyne are not injured, Pep Guardiola confirmed, despite them remaining at home for Manchester City's Champions League trip to Olympiacos.

The senior duo have been ever-present in City's games this season, but were notable absentees in the travelling squad to Greece for City's latest Champions League group game.

However, Guardiola confirmed that the decision to leave them out of the game was taken for fitness reasons, to give the experienced pair a rest ahead of the Premier League clash with Burnley this weekend.

"No, they are fatigued, many games, mental fatigue," Guardiola said, when asked if Walker or De Bruyne were injured.

"They were a little bit tired. In the beginning [of the season] we couldn't do it with all the problems. Now we have players back so it was good for them to have a week off."

Explaining the rest of his team selection, Guardiola said the decision to bring in John Stones and Benjamin Mendy was made for this game and without any others in mind,

"New game new players, everyone was ready," he said. "I decide for this line up.

"He's ready to go. That's why he plays," the manager added regarding Raheem Sterling, who returned to the starting line up after only making the bench at the weekend against Tottenham following his injury over the international break.

However, Sergio Aguero is not yet ready to play a full 90 minutes, with Guardiola reiterating that the Argentine needs more time to regain his fitness.

Guardiola said: "Not for 90 minutes. He come from the injured. One step at a time.

"It depends [if he will come off the bench]. Always before I have some idea."
