Why Kevin De Bruyne wore a Sheffield Wednesday shirt when celebrating Man City treble

Kevin De Bruyne had fans scratching their heads by celebrating Man City's historic Champions League win in a Sheffield Wednesday shirt.

The Belgian star's big night was cut short in Istanbul after he was forced off during the first half with injury. But although Pep Guardiola's men clearly missed the presence of their playmaker, Rodri's second half winner sealed glory as City overcame Inter Milan 1-0, sparking huge celebrations.

Amid the post-match partying, the players stayed on the field until gone 1am. And after finally heading back to the dressing room, things continued in style with the squad drinking beers, belting out songs and smoking cigars, whilst some staff members opted to slide across the floor in their underwear.

Jack Grealish appeared to be at the forefront of proceedings, dominating the microphone as team-mates danced and embraced around him. But bizarrely, an ecstatic De Bruyne was pictured donning a classic Wednesday shirt from the '90s.

@BeReyt0114 posted the footage on Twitter, with the caption: "Kevin De Bruyne is a Wednesdayite!" His actions appeared a wind-up towards former Sheffield United star Kyle Walker, who was seen laughing and joking with the midfielder over his new-found affiliation to the Owls.

But now another possible explanation has emerged. De Bruyne's wife Michele is good friends with the partner of former Wednesday captain Glenn Loovens, and the Dutchman was spotted in Istanbul mingling with City fans, but wearing the jersey of his former club.

@Lendog1984 posted a picture of him with Loovens, writing: "Up the Champions League final Owls." And other fans soon started putting two and two together, with @SteelsSp echoing the sentiments of many by saying: "Looks like De Bruyne ended up wearing that shirt."

The 29-year-old was in very different attire when he returned home on Saturday evening though, as one of three players who opted not too jet off on a chartered plane to Ibiza. Instead, he and wife Michele attended the Tattu Chinese restaurant in Manchester, along with Ilkay Gundogan, Stefan Ortega and club staff members.

De Bruyne will no doubt be back in Sky Blue on Monday night, when the squad and coaches embark on a silverware parade around Manchester. The group will depart from Tonman Street, Deansgate, at approximately 6.30pm, an hour after a live stage show gets underway on Oxford Street.
