Why Katie Taylor never knows what her walk out song will be before fights

One of the last things Katie Taylor thinks about before heading to the ring is what her walk out music will be, because she never knows what she's going to hear.

A tradition in the professional game, the ring walk sets the tone for big fights and allows the inner showmanship and personality in fighters to shine.

But while stars such as Conor McGregor have made their entrance music iconic in recent years, Taylor admits she plays no part in selecting the tune for her ring walk.

A no-nonsense fighter whose dedication to boxing has seen her become one of the all-time greats, Taylor has no time for the show-business side of the game and leaves that to her camp.

In fact, the Bray woman sometimes finds herself guessing what tune is going to hit when she heads out to the ring.

"I'm just focusing on what I have to do in the fight," Taylor told The Boxing Show on Sky Sports this afternoon.

"Sometimes during the ring walk I'm actually thinking about what music is playing - because I never really make that decision.

"There has been times where I'm in the tunnel to walk out and I'm actually thinking: 'Gosh, I wonder what song is going to played here tonight.

"(I've been surprised) plenty of times actually, but they've always been great songs thankfully".

Meanwhile, Taylor admits she is missing her family and her mother's cooking during lockdown in America.

She returned to Connecticut in January for a training camp for her mega-fight with Amanda Serrano, which was planned to take place last weekend.

That date was moved to July 4 due to the coronavirus pandemic and boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has stated that it is likely to be moved again to even later in the year.

Taylor jokes she is currently undergoing her longest training camp ever as she is unsure of exactly when she will fight again, while she misses those closest to her.

Speaking to The Boxing Show on Sky Sports from her Connecticut base, Taylor said: "I definitely do miss family from time to time, but I am very, very busy with training during the week as well.

"Thank God for technology because it is very, very easy to stay in touch with family with video calls or Zoom calls or whatever.

"I am pretty much in touch with family every single day so it makes it an awful lot easier to actually stay in touch so it's great.

She added: "I probably just miss being around my niece and nephews and miss popping into my granny every single day. She's getting a bit older now so I definitely miss that side of it and of course I miss my mam's cooking. I'm a terrible cook so having to do my own cooking over here is a nightmare."
