Why Kate Garraway is missing from Good Morning Britain as host steps down

Good Morning Britain's beloved host Kate Garraway will not be seen on our screens this week, as the show is fronted by Adil Ray and Charlotte Hawkins instead.

Kate, 53, recently explained that she was taking some time off from the show amid what has been an incredibly challenging time for her family.

Her husband Derek Draper remains in intensive care after a COVID-19 battle put him in a medically induced coma.

He is in a "barely conscious" state with long-term damage wreaked on his body, and may never fully recover.

The mum-of-two thanked her GMB "family" for their support as she announced on Thursday that she was stepping down.

She said she wanted to focus on preparing her children Billy, 11, and Darcey, 14, for going back to school.

"I'm actually not here next week, I'm taking a bit of time off to help Billy get sorted for secondary school, the children, Darcey as well to get into school," she said.

"I just want to say thanks to all of you for being absolutely brilliant since I've come back through challenging times," she added.

"Everyone here, you, Ben, Adil and all of the people off and on screen have been amazing.

"The nice thing is everyone talks about ITV and television being this brutal business, and it 's not, it's a family and you've all been amazing."

Kate will also fill her time supporting Derek as he continues his recovery in hospital.

And she is writing a self-help book called Good Morning Life: How To Wake Up Every Day And Smile .

She is now editing the book to include "insights" from her experience with Derek and his COVID-19 battle.

Regular GMB hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid will be back hosting the show from September 1, but it's unclear when viewers will next see Kate onscreen again.

* Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am
