Why Kalvin Phillips has moved ahead of Declan Rice in England's midfield pecking order

Kalvin Phillips' man-of-the-match performance for Leeds United against Everton will have caught the attention of England boss Gareth Southgate.

That's the verdict of former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock.

Warnock was one of many pundits to be purring over Phillips' performance at Goodison Park at the weekend.

Phillips bossed the engine room as Marcelo Bielsa's side secured a much-deserved 1-0 win on Merseyside.

Warnock believes that Phillips has now moved ahead of one of his main rivals for a starting spot for the Three Lions, Declan Rice.

West Ham man Rice is more experienced on the international scene, with 13 caps compared to Phillips' four, but Warnock believes the Leeds academy graduate is now in pole position for a midfield slot.

Speaking on Sky Sports News, Warnock said: "It was magnificent from Phillips (against Everton) and Gareth Southgate will be delighted with his performances as well.

"And I think he has a big decision to make who he plays in that holding position, whether it be him or Declan Rice.

"Personally, I think Phillips is (ahead of him). I think the quality that he shows both going forward and his ability to start attacks, and his understanding of breaking up the play.

"I think he has a better passing range than Declan Rice.

"It's not that Declan Rice doesn't have it, I just don't think he has the confidence to do it at times, and possibly the system they (West Ham) play, to allow him to hit those diagonal balls, to hit those forward balls towards others, whereas I think Phillips and Leeds United are set up that way."

Phillips was left out of the most recent Three Lions' squad earlier this month due to injury.

But he will surely be a shoe-in for next summer's delayed European Championships if he replicates performances like the one he put in at Goodison Park.

Warnock added: "That was probably his best performance in a Leeds shirt in the Premier League.

"I think he was outstanding from start to finish.

"Breaking up play and letting others do it. I thought he was brilliant."
